Four-decade drought ended for American women in the New York City Marathon -Ben and Tyler

  • What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?

  • Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?

  • Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?

  1. I think this win for Flanagan gives a very good reputation for long distance running for the U.S. because she beat the three time Kenyan, who has won the NYC marathon. Also because she was the first american women in 40 years to win the race. That sets a new goal and a new standard for long distance running for the U.S. Also it shows that Americans can run just as well as any other countries runners can.

I think it means the world to her, for many reasons. One she is the first american women to win the race since 40 years ago. Also it shows how much she has trained and worked endlessly to accomplish. And it shows other countries who run this race that the americans are in it to win it, they are not just doing it for fun.

I think there will be a higher expectation because now a lot of other countries runners will see that now the U.S. has a people like Shalane Flanagan. And people like her can really compete and do really good things in long distance races.

I think going into a race as an underdog you will have a lot of nervous but I think that you are also ready to show what you can really do. And that is exactly what Flanagan did. There were very good women running in this race. And she showed them how an underdog like her can run a race like that.

  2. I do think this win helps the US reputation in long distance running. This is one of the most important races each year, and the longer the drought continued for US runners, the more credibility was going to fall. Now, after Flanagans win, the standard for US runners will be higher and the reputation will become much better.

I think the most important thing that this win does is set a new standard for US female runners. Before, many runners may have been questioning if they had a real chance to compete, but now that should no longer be a question. I think there is a chance we will see many US runners repeating what Flanagan did in the future.

Yes there will be a higher standard because Flanagan has proven what US women are capable of doing, and has proven to be a great role model for other US runners. Other runners will now take the US more seriously which will set higher expectations.

I think that being an underdog has a different affect on performance based on the person. For some people, they will play or run scared and not to their full potential. To others, like Flanagan, they will be at the top of their game and perform with a higher sense of urgency.

  3. Yes, I definitely think that this win by Flanagan absolutely gives the U.S. runners a better reputation, because as the articles says this is the first win for an american women in 4 decades. So prior to her win people wouldn't think of the U.S. runners as the strong ones and expect other countries such as Kenya to always be better. But this win has been so heavily publicized that she is bringing a lot of positive attention towards the U.S. long distance runners.

It means a lot to Flanagan, and she is receiving so much praise for this accomplishment. It also means that the U.S. will be given more hope to win more races in the future. The U.S. team will also be more respected and could hold themselves to higher standards now that in the past people would not have expected them to win anything.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?
Yeah, I don't think people will be expecting the U.S. to win, but I think that people definitely will not be expecting the U.S. to do something like not win for 4 decades. But expectations will be higher now.

I think it gives somebody a lot of motivation to prove people wrong, and prove themselves that they can in fact win. Being an underdog can also be a lot less stressful as it is for someone expected to win. So for somebody like Flanagan she just has to give it her best as nobody expected her to win of course.

  4. 1)The U.S. isn't seen as the premier racing country, so it certainly helps the reputation. However, they will always take a backseat to countries like Kenya.

    2) It certainly means a lot to her to break such a barrier. As a competitive race runner, she has achieved what many American Women dreamed to accomplish. Now, many may aspire to be like her, and may now believe that the U.S. is back on the map.

3)Maybe slightly, but again I think that countries such as Kenya will always be looked to as world powers. I don't think it changes the expectations, rather it shows that the U.S. can hang with the dominant nations.

4)If you go about it the right way, it gives you an extra chip on your shoulder. Nobody expects you to win, so you have nothing to lose. If you doubt yourself, it will have a negative effect, and you will have a tough time.

  5. 1) Winning a race such as the New York City marathon will definitely give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running because it is such a highly competitive marathon.
    2) It probably means a lot to Flanagan because she ended a drought that was so long. I bet it also means a lot to all of the distance running athletes in the United States as well.
    3) There will probably be more pressure for the U.S. to perform because she did put the United States back on the map as a racing country. There are probably runners out there who no longer think countries such as Kenya are unbeatable now.
    4) I think that a lot of people perform better when they are underdogs. There is less pressure on them to succeed and I think that a lot of people crumble in those situations. However, when you’re the underdog, the amount of pressure is diminished.

  6. 1. This win for Shalane Flanagan proves that the US is still a force within the long distance running competition. Especially since the New York Marathon has thousands of participants form around the globe competing to win the race. On such a large stage and large completion base, it solidifies the argument that US is a running nation to reckon with

2.It means a lot to Flanagan because the New York Marathon requires lots of training. It is the center of a large audience, so she had to perform to the best of her ability, which eventually won her the race. This exertion of energy being paid off had to feel good for er and the US audience.

    3. People never expected a US woman runner to win the New York Marathon because the Africa countries are so dominant in the race. People won't expect the same result year after year. This win provided the US with an opportunity to put themselves in a dominant position.

4.The effect of being an underdog has a huge in an athletes performance. Since the athlete is not favored to win, it pushes the athlete to perform at an ability to prove that wrong. Also, people love supporting underdogs because it brings a great excitement to the competition if the underdog wins.

  7. 1. Yes, Flanagan's win helps the US reputation in long distance running. The New York Marathon is one of the most important races of the year, and the longer the drought of US runners not winning continued, the prominence of US runners would continue to fall. Now, after Flanagans win, the standard for US runners will be higher and the reputation will become much better.

    2. The most important thing that this win does is set a new gold standard for US female runners. Before this victory, many runners had been questioning if they had a real chance to compete but now that should no longer be an issue or a question. Flanagan has opened a door where any US runner can do what she has done and more in the future.

    3. Yes, there is a high standard now because Flanagan has proved that US women are capable of doing, all while making her a role model for other and future US runners. Other runners will now take the US more seriously which will set higher expectations.

    4. The underdog tag has a different affect on performance. People or teams that are "underdogs" have a desire to prove they are better than the favored opponents. Flanagan is a perfect example, and due to this underdog tag being put on her, she probably ran the best race of her career and maybe her life.

  8. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?

I think that this win for Flanagan definitely gives the US a better reputation for distance running. They hadn't had someone from the US win in awhile, so this win asserts the US back to one of the top countries for running. With their reputation for distance running going up, they will be looked at by other countries more seriously, and now everyone will try and capture the throne from the US.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?

This four decade drought that was broken obviously means a lot to Flanagan and the US in terms of winning, but another aspect is brought into centerstage from this win. Right now in America, many American women feel like they are discriminated, so having a women win the marathon puts a lot of pride in their hearts. The timing of the win couldn't of came at a better time for American women.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?

Yes, there will be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future. Now that they have re-captured first place, teams will have to start taking them more seriously. All of the people that run this marathon all have to train very hard. Ultimately, they are training to take away the US's win, so with everyone trying to beat the US, a higher expectation will naturally occur.

Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?

Personally, I think that going in as an underdog benefits someone's performance. They are able to go into an event with a nothing to lose attitude, so there isn't a lot of pressure on that persons shoulder. Performing at a high level under pressure situations is very difficult, so I think that coming into an event like this as an underdog ultimately benefitted Shalane Flanagan.

  9. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?
Yes, it does the win by her gives a better name for women as well as the country of the US. This is because she represented the US and the women can win marathons from the US. By being the first woman from the US to win it in 40 years.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?
This means that the people of the US can be proud of Flanagan and hard work and support more runners like her. By winning the NYC marathon it gives nationalism to the US and attention to long distance running.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?
With the 40 year losing streak snapped, this sets the bar high for runners from the US to be as good as Flanagan and show them it is within reach. While the US does not want to have another losing streak like that again.

Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?
By being the underdog she can relax more and just run her own race and block out the noise of her expectations. By doing so it could have helped her make a good time but underdog or not runners usually get in their zone and can run a race to their full potential.

  10. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?

I think that this will give the U.S. a better reputation because this win is not only prestigious in winning alone, but this also snapped a 40-year drought. And winning such a big race raises the bar of the U.S. athlete.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?

To Flanagan, this is a huge step in female athletics. To have a woman end this streak of losing is phenomenal and it will bring a pride and respect to Flanagan. To relate this to our current class discussion, this will also open a door for endorsements for her and that is huge because this will be a huge financial boost for her.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?

I think there will be because this shows that the U.S. can produce a quality athlete that could win a race, and by ending this losing drought can foreshadow a new era of U.S. runners.

Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?

Being an underdog only boosts someone's performance. They're not expected to win, but they're competitive, and the doubt on the person's performance only makes that athlete try so much harder.

  11. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?
A victory in any sport can do a lot for the reputation of the victor which should be the case for the US after the victory. However this improved rep may be short lived if Flanagan or other us runners are unable to win consistently. Should this happen than Flanagans victory will be seen more as a anomaly.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?
This is obviously a great thing for the US to finally have a winner in this race especially after such a long drought. However this must mean even more to Flanagan as she has etched her name into the record books.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?
I don't believe the expectations will be raised to much for the United States because despite winning Flanagan an other runners are unlikely to be favored to win again.
Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?
As an underdog there is nothing to lose an everything to gain, when a major favorite beats a underdog the underdog loses nothing, as it was a game they were expected to already loose. However when a underdog wins it gains a tremendous amount of respect and attention from the nation even if that attention tends to fade quickly.

  12. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?
Yes because it gives America the international reputation of being a strong running country. To have a women win the NYC marathon shows that the country has very strong women athletes and will be very competitive in the olympics.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?
It means that the women have developed past discrimination to become more equal to men in athletics. This is a true win for women who are trying to get more rights and break stereotypes of women in athletics. The drought shows how in the past men dominated long distance races.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?
I don't think that the expectation for US running will be much higher in the future because it is only one race and the race is in NYC so there are mostly American runners.

Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?
I think being an underdog can take the pressure of the athlete. I also think as an underdog an athlete will have more determination to win the race.

  13. 1. I definitely think this win gives the US a better reputation in distance running. Often the United States hosts these large events but in many cases Americans aren't the ones who win so it definitely makes an impact.

    2. I think in terms of the sport of distance running it means a lot and is a big deal. Clearly American women have not had as much success in this event as they would have liked so it's definitely important.

    3. I think any time a team or a person wins something once the expectations are always that they will do it again so yes I do think expectation will rise for American women in the future.

    4. It gives an athlete a "nothing to lose" mentality because there is no expectation to do that well. It takes stress and pressure off athletes and often allows them to do far better than they thought.

  14. * Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?
This does give the US a better reputation for distance running. Historically, there have not been many American distance runners that have come in the top five of many marathons. Now that we have someone who has put America back on the world stage for long distance, the country as a whole can now be more respected in the international running community. The NYC marathon is generally accepted in the US as the most famous marathon, so it is an extremely high achievement for an American to defeat other ranked runners.

    * What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?
It shows a sense of resilience to the US because she proved that even though runners from other countries dominate the sport, she can have success. It also is important for a female American to win during this time in order to show continued American success by women in sports. For Flanagan, she can attain a bunch of endorsements and entrance to other events due to her success at the NYC marathon.

    * Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?
There won’t be higher expectations because the win could come across as a fluke. Also, since this is their first win at a home marathon in a while, they haven’t established dominance in the sport. Marathon running in the US is not a very prominent sport, so ensuring future success only relies on more Americans coming back and winning more marathons.

    * Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?
She was likely inspired to show everyone that she is a better runner than she is credited for. Also, she wanted to show better runners that she is a legitimate contender, and did so by winning against all of the top runners. Historically, underdogs can have success, but they do not always win the whole entire competition. Underdogs don’t have any expectations from viewers or commentators because they do not draw the most attention.

  15. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?
I think this will give the US a better reputation for distance running because historically, in distance races, we aren't very respected because we don't place very often. Now, an American won the race so we all are starting to think we have good runners.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?
It means a lot to American women because they all work extremely hard but their work hasn't paid off for 40 years, until now. It gives them all hope.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?
Yes, there will be higher expectations for US in running in the future because of this because when you win, everyone wants to see if it was a fluke or if it was actually talent. Next years race will tell us what this race was.

Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?
Underdogs are always inspired to win to prove everyone wrong so it always will affect an underdogs performance. Underdogs will always have more of a motivation to win then the front runner.

  16. 1. yes, it is milestone because it has not happened in a long time, and this could be revolutionary for the us long distance running.

    2. It is a spark of hope for our runners who run long distance. If this American won, then it will inspire others to work hard to try and reach the same success.

    3. Yes, now that we have a boosted reputation, we will be expected to continue our growth in long distance running.

    4. It will either hold someone back, or motivate them. If one's not mentally strong enough, being the underdog will get in their head, making them already go inot the race thinking they will lose. For those who are mentally stronger, it will be a motivation to beat those who are supposedly better than they are. They want to prove they are number one through their hard work, and that the predictions were wrong.

  17. Does this win for Shalane Flanagan give the U.S. a better reputation for distance running?

Well I don't know the current reputation of American long distance running but this statistic didn't really mean much to the people I talked to about it so i dont think it will do that much.

What does ending this four decade drought without having an American women win the NYC Marathon mean to Flanagan and the U.S.?

It means a lot to Flanagan because its her first win in NYC and she also was the first American of her generation to win the competition.

Will there be a higher expectation for U.S. running in the future because of this win? Why?

I think this may add some pressure to this race specifically, however, it does not add pressure to the American running as a whole because America is always expected to place well.

Flanagan was an underdog coming into this race, how does going into a sporting event as an underdog affect someone’s performance?

It can drastically do one of two things: 1 create a losing mentality therefore ruining their spirits and chances to win or even do well. 2 to inspire an individual uprising and creates fire in someone to push themselves harder.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No. Not many people pay attention to the sport of running. Locally it is a big deal, but the U.S doesn't seem to pay much attention to distance running. It's not flashy, it doesn't take a lot of strength or visual strategy.

I don't think the sex of the person who wins matters that much. It is a huge accomplishment regardless. Of course, to many people, this is an important milestone toward proving that women are just as capable as men.

There might be, however I think it takes more than one win in 40 years to raise expectations. Maybe if this win inspires more women to become better runners, and the U.S has more high caliber female runners who win more events then the expectation will be higher.

I think it inspires the person. It encourages you to prove people wrong, and maybe even boosts your confidence especially when you know you're being underestimated.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think it doesn't has as much of an impact on U.S. as a whole, but more for long distance women runners. It is an incredible thing that she did and being a women, breaking the streak of men winning the race in amazing.

I don't think it has any further meaning for her or the United States. It is an amazing thing that she did and breaking this streak is awesome, but the sex of an athlete should not mean anything. We are in the age of sex not meaning anything and it applies in all aspects of life.

Again, I do not think that there should be any special treatment or expectation for runners like Flanagan in the future. It is an amazing thing that she did and it puts her on the map, but still does not hype up other runners like her. An athlete is an athlete and they should all be treated that way based upon that title.

There is an underdog in every race and every sporting event around the world. If anything, it should push athletes and teams even harder to accomplish their goals. Anything can happen at any time and it is a matter of who wants it more.
